Pompei.
It´s not the kind of movies I like. Not for the theme, ut for the fantastic of the whole presentation.
I forced my self to watch. Who am I to judge. If everybody say it´s great...
It still reminds me, how good it was to let my self be carried into the fantasy world. That said, it´s about sitting down, to watch an allow the argument to conquer me.
Did not happen.
In the last decades, everything has changed too much and the recent generations have lost all the notion how things once were different.
Pompei existed at a time when a woman would not go out by herself It wasn´t even common for her to have direct contact with horses as they were used for transportation, mainly the military. The riches were transported in litters, usually caried by servants in short distances, or they could just walk. For big distances the litters or carriages where pushed by horses.
The people, who lived in total poverty, tried to pass unnoticed by the ruling classes and military, tried to pass unnoticed by ruling classes and the military. They were easily condemned to dead and by drag, the whole family if the crime would justified it. The most common of the crimes was being a Christian.
For this reason, and because Man always fight for what he believes, Christians, although persecuted, continue to gather in secret to spread the Word.
The fighters of the great arena of the Coliseum, when coming from the condemened side of population, fighted for their lives. No training. The warriors use to train hard to be the one to win as losing could mean the end of their lives, as the Emperors wil. No one had an arrogant dialogue like that seen in the scenes of Pompeii. Their lives were in someones hands.
But no one controls he mind and the eyes easily denouce it. When this happened, the insolent was immediately ordered ot to dare to look his superiror, an invitation frequently assaulted bu a whip. A look of displeasure was in itself a manifestation of opposition. Inadmissible.
The servants and the common people, never walked with te confidence of anyone who knows that at the end of the film, it would have been the fearless and admirable protagonist.
They lived gaunt by the uncertainty of the vile awakening of the Emperor.
The bad and unrealistc dialogues and proximity between different classes were evident in this movie as well in "12 years of slavery", even if this last one was based in a true story.
The lack of investigation, the will to give something modern that captures the attention of the younger generations, steals genuineness to the argumentes and choose the easy path of fighting and pursuits.
Another aspect to emphasize is that in the Roman time, the fights in the arena were disputed with several types of weapons, not so much with the sword. They use to fight with the net, the fork, the pack, and so on. Fighters were named according to the weapon they used, such as, Mirmilons and Remains.
Anyway, if you want to make a film of fights and persecutions, call it an appropriate name, but not say that is based on a historical event. In fantasy there are also volcanoes and alnds submurged by lava. Call it the movie of " City Submerged by lava and many fights".
It´s the opinion of someone who had the opportunity to watch great tv series in time of great cinema productions and read great liraty works.
